NNX13CD02C - - THE AREA-I TEAM HAS DEVELOPED AND FLIGHT TESTED THE UNMANNED PROTOTYPE-TECHNOLOGY EVALUATION AND RESEARCH AIRCRAFT OR PTERA ("PTERA" BEING GREEK FOR WING, OR WING-LIKE). THE PTERA FLEW SUCCESSFULLY DURING PHASE I OF THIS PROGRAM, AND STANDS TO ENHANCE THE ALREADY CAPABLE NASA AERONAUTICS TEST PROGRAM (ATP) BY ENABLING THE LOW-COST, LOW-RISK, FLIGHT-BASED EVALUATION OF EVERYTHING FROM ADVANCED AERODYNAMIC TREATMENTS TO CONTROL SYSTEMS AND SENSOR PAYLOADS. THE PTERA WILL BRIDGE THE GAP BETWEEN WIND TUNNEL TESTING AND MANNED FLIGHT TESTING TO GREATLY REDUCE TECHNOLOGY DEVELOPMENT TIME, COST, AND RISK. THIS WORK SEEKS TO FURTHER MATURE THE PTERA SYSTEM THROUGH RIGOROUS FLIGHT TESTING AND WILL BEGIN THE INTEGRATION OF THE PTERA INTO THE NASA ATP THROUGH THE DELIVERY OF A NEW PTERA BASELINE SYSTEM TO NASA. SEVERAL CORE CAPABILITIES THAT THE PTERA WOULD BRING TO THE ATP INCLUDE: 1) A LOW-COST, LOW-RISK FLIGHT TEST FACILITY THAT CAN BE USED TO EXPAND ATP'S ROLE IN THE TESTING AND VALIDATION OF NASA'S PHYSICS-BASED MULTI-DISCIPLINARY ANALYSIS AND OPTIMIZATION (MDAO) TOOLS 2) THE ABILITY TO FLIGHT TEST ADVANCED AERODYNAMIC TREATMENTS, HEALTH MANAGEMENT AND CONTROL SYSTEMS, AND TO PERFORM EXPERIMENTS IN STRUCTURES AND AEROELASTICITY FOR A FRACTION OF THE COST OF A MANNED FLIGHT TEST PROGRAM. 3) THE ABILITY TO FLIGHT TEST CUTTING-EDGE AND COMPLEX SYSTEMS WHOSE COST AND RISK ARE TOO HIGH FOR MANNED FLIGHTS. 4) A TESTBED WITH MODULAR AIRFRAME THAT ENABLES THE EVALUATION OF MULTIPLE TECHNOLOGIES WITH THE SAME AIRFRAME. 5) A TESTBED WITH A LARGE PAYLOAD CAPACITY THAT FACILITATES THE INEXPENSIVE AND RISK-MITIGATING FLIGHT TEST EVALUATION OF A WIDE ARRAY OF SENSORS AND PAYLOADS AS WELL AS THE EVALUATION OF FLIGHT-TEST MEASUREMENT SYSTEMS BEFORE THEY TRANSITION TO MANNED PROGRAMS. 6) THE ABILITY TO PERFORM UNMANNED, AUTONOMOUS, FLIGHT EXPERIMENTS RELATING TO THE BURGEONING FIELD OF AUTONOMOUS UNMANNED AIRCRAFT, INCLUDING EXPERIMENTS SUPPORTING UAS INTEGRATION INTO THE NAS.

NNX11CA37C - IN THE PROPOSED PHASE II PROGRAM, WE WILL CONTINUE THE DEVELOPMENT OF MG BIPROPELLANT ROCKETS FOR MARTIAN PAV APPLICATIONS. IN PHASE I, WE PROVED THE FEASIBILITY OF THIS GAME-CHANGING TECHNOLOGY. THROUGH CHEMICAL ANALYSIS, WE DETERMINED THAT MG CAN BE COMBUSTED WITH CO2 CONDENSED IN-SITU FROM THE MARTIAN ATMOSPHERE TO YIELD ISP 240 S. WE THEN SUCCESSFULLY DEMONSTRATED A LOW FIDELITY MG-CO2 ROCKET IN THE LABORATORY, ACHIEVING COMBUSTION FOR 43S BEFORE VOLUNTARY TERMINATION. WE ALSO ANALYZED THE USE OF H2O AND H2O2 AS OXIDIZERS, AND AL AS A PROPELLANT. H2O EXISTS AT THE MARTIAN POLES AND BELOW THE SURFACE, WHILE BOTH MG AND AL CAN BE ACQUIRED IN-SITU FROM THE MARTIAN REGOLITH. WE DETERMINED THAT THE IDEAL VACUUM ISP OF A 10 BAR MG-H20 ROCKET WOULD BE AS HIGH AS 340 S, WHILE THE ISP OF A AL-STEAM ROCKET WOULD BE 380 S, AND HYDROGEN PEROXIDE COULD YIELD HIGHER DENSITY ISP AND OPERATIONAL BENEFITS. IN PHASE II WE PLAN TO DEVELOP AND TEST AN INTEGRATED HIGH PERFORMANCE LABORATORY MODEL SYSTEM. WE WILL FIRST FULLY CHARACTERIZE MULTIPLE PROPELLANT OXIDIZER COMBINATIONS IN A LINEAR COMBUSTOR. THEN WE WILL DESIGN, BUILD, AND TEST AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM INCLUDING BOTH A ROCKET AND A PROPELLANT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM. COMPREHENSIVE TEST RESULTS WOULD FEED BACK INTO THE DESIGN, CULMINATING IN AN ADVANCED SYSTEM SIZED FOR PROSPECTIVE NEAR-TERM APPLICATIONS.

NNX10CF57P - THE PROCESS OF AIRCRAFT DESIGN REQUIRES THE INTEGRATION OF DATA FROM INDIVIDUAL ANALYSIS OF AERODYNAMIC, STRUCTURAL, THERMAL, AND BEHAVIORAL PROPERTIES OF A FLIGHT VEHICLE. AT PRESENT, THERE IS NO SIMPLE WAY TO INTEGRATE THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSES EARLY IN THE DESIGN PROCESS. AURORA FLIGHT SCIENCES AND THE MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY AEROSPACE COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN LABORATORY PROPOSE TO CREATE A SYSTEM LEVEL ANALYSIS FRAMEWORK CALLED THE EXTENSIBLE DATA SET ARCHITECTURE TO FACILITATE THIS INTEGRATION, AND THEREFORE PROVIDE RAPID SYSTEM-WIDE IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF DESIGN CHANGES TO A FLIGHT VEHICLE. THE EXTENSIBLE DATA SET ARCHITECTURE (EDSA) IS A GENERIC DATA STORAGE STRUCTURE READY FOR USE BY A DIVERSE AND EXTENDABLE SET OF SOFTWARE TOOLS AND CODES. THE EDSA CAN BE ARBITRARILY EXTENDED TO ALLOW ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONALITY AND PROVIDES A NATURAL FRAMEWORK FOR FUTURE DEVELOPMENT OF AEROSPACE SYSTEMS. THE FRAMEWORK INCLUDES AS PART OF ITS STRUCTURE THE RELEVANT METADATA FOR ENSURING VERSION CONTROL, TRACEABILITY, CONTEXT-SPECIFIC DOCUMENTATION, AND INTERFACE DATA FOR RELEVANT TOOLS, WHILE PROVIDING A SIMPLE STRUCTURE FOR EXTENDING AN EXISTING DATA SET TO TRANSPARENTLY INCLUDE NEW MEMBERS. THE FOUR PRIMARY COMPONENTS OF THIS FRAMEWORK WILL BE 1) AN EXTENSIBLE DATA SET USED BY ALL CODES AND ANALYSIS TOOLS TO STORE AND EXCHANGE RELEVANT INFORMATION; 2) A TOOL SET WHICH CAN TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE DATA SET, MADE UP OF BOTH EXISTING PROGRAMS AND USER DEFINED VEHICLE SPECIFIC CODES; 3) A CONTROLLER WHICH PROVIDES ORGANIZATION, OPERATES THE TOOLS, AND MANAGES ITERATION AND OPTIMIZATION OF THE DESIGN, AND 4) A DISPLAY CODE WHICH PRESENTS THE RESULTS OF THE ANALYSIS TO THE USER.
